Since Minis are made on the same chassis as the BMW 1 & 2 Series, these vehicles have many of the same maintenance needs. Here are the most common repairs we do to these cars.
Timing Chain Issues
Both makes suffer from timing chain problems. A timing chain is supposed to be a positive, as they’re not supposed to need periodic replacement, as do timing belts. But BMW 2 and Mini engines suffer from broken timing chains. Pistons and valves collide when the timing chain breaks, resulting in a totaled engine. Sometimes this circumstance is the result of a faulty timing chain guide. Often it is because the timing chain has stretched. Besides breaking, a stretched timing chain can jump a tooth, resulting in poor running that is otherwise difficult to diagnose. We will inspect this aspect of your vehicle along with other services to ensure a long life for your engine, whether a BMW or a Mini.
Power Steering Pump Failure
Minis and BMWs power the steering system with an electric pump for fuel savings. A fan keeps the pump cool, but it has been problematic. Failed pumps lead to failed pumps and even fires in the engine compartment. We can switch this part to something more reliable.
Leaking Water Pump and Thermostat Housing
The use of plastic has made these components unreliable. Your first sign of trouble may be coolant under your car. If the leak worsens, your indication will be an overheated engine indication on your dashboard. Since this failure is common, we will inspect for leaks whenever your car is in our shop.
Peripheral Sensor Failures
A modern engine runs smoothly and fuel-efficiently while meeting smog requirements because a central computer makes second-by-second adjustments to many different factors. The computer’s inputs are only as good as the information it receives from sensors throughout your vehicle.
Sensor failure is one of the good news aspects of car repair, as they are relatively inexpensive and easy to replace. A failed crankshaft sensor, for example, may cause your car to go into reduced power mode. Besides noticing the lack of power, a check engine light will be illuminated. A failed oxygen sensor will cause poor running and increased fuel usage. Often cars are driven some distances with check engine lights turned on; this is a bad idea. Besides alerting you to a failed sensor, some check engine light notifications warn of incipient damage.
