Peoria, AZ — Can Dry Needling Treatment Help Your Chronic Pain?

SYNOPSIS: This article covers which chronic pain dry needling actually helps, which it doesn't, what a session feels like, and how to tell if you're a fit.

Is Your Pain the Kind Dry Needling Helps?

BY: Ian Hover, Modern Medicine of Peoria, AZ

Dry needling gets talked up for chronic pain, and it does help a lot of people. But it isn't a fix for everything, and that's the part worth getting straight before you try it. The treatment works on a specific kind of pain. If yours is that kind, it can reach what stretching and massage never quite did. If it isn't, you'll want to know that too.

So here's how to tell which side you're on.

The Pain It's Built For

Dry needling goes after trigger points—those tight, ropey knots that form in a muscle and won't release. They stay tender, they stiffen the area, and they refer pain elsewhere, so the spot that hurts isn't always where the knot sits. When muscle knots like those are driving your pain, the needle reaches them at a depth that nothing on the surface gets to.

That covers a lot of common chronic pain:

  • Neck and shoulder tension that has lingered for months
  • Lower back pain with knots referring down into the hip or glute
  • Tension headaches tied to tight muscles where the neck meets the skull
  • Stubborn calf, hip, or hamstring tightness that won't stretch loose
  • Old injuries where the muscle stayed guarded long after healing

If your pain lives in the muscle, loosens briefly with massage, then tightens back up, that's a strong sign it's the kind dry needling helps.

The Pain It Won't Fix

Here's the honest other half. Some chronic pain doesn't come from muscle knots, and the needle won't change those:

  • Pain from advanced arthritis or bone-on-bone joint wear
  • A structural tear that needs its own treatment
  • Nerve pain coming from a pinched or compressed nerve
  • Pain with numbness, weakness, or other signs pointing past the muscle

Dry needling might take the edge off any muscular tension riding along with these, but it isn't reaching the actual source. That's why a real evaluation comes first, to sort out how much of your pain is muscle and how much is something else.

How to Find Out

A quick assessment settles it. The therapist feels for the trigger points, presses to see what reproduces your pain, and figures out whether knots are behind it. From there, it's clear whether the needle is likely to help or whether your pain needs a different approach.

If chronic pain has you wondering whether dry needling is worth a shot, Modern Medicine of Peoria, AZ, can check whether your pain is the kind it helps. Give us a call to get started.
