The holidays are the perfect time to establish boundaries with your family and yourself. Often, it seems like the holiday chaos never ends with the shopping, the wrapping, the cooking, and the parties.  If you establish boundaries, you’re taking care of your needs first and focusing on what brings you happiness this Christmas.

Decide what part of the holidays gives you joy

We all do so much during the holiday season, but what part of your holiday to-do list actually brings you joy? Is it seeing family you haven’t seen in months, baking holiday cookies, or drinking hot cocoa and watching cheesy holiday movies? I personally love baking cookies with my friends and nieces. Sometimes, it’s an all-day affair but memories are made.

Allow Yourself to Skip Some Stuff and Say NO!

Learn to say NO and forgo some holiday obligations for your own sanity, even if it’s your own family. It’s taking care of your needs. Maybe you and your husband want to go to the local football game with friends for more carefree, different vibe. Maybe, you want to stay home instead of always driving to so many parties. It’s okay to say NO.

Honor Your Feelings and Needs

Often the holidays are a painful time of year if you’ve lost someone close to you due to death or divorce.  Acknowledge your feelings and honor your needs, whether it’s to be around cheerful people, or to stay home watching Christmas movies with your dog snuggled up against you. Decide what will help you heal the best this season.

Re-evaluate your expectations of your family

Lower the expectations of the perfect family Christmas. No one’s holiday party looks like a perfect holiday photo card. However, that doesn’t mean you need to accept toxic behavior. Does it bother you when angry political discussions begin at dinner or when your grandmother always comments on your weight? Politely mentions these things in a direct manner and then change the subject.

Take time to Recharge

Take time for you. Even if you’re crazy busy, get up a few minutes to meditate and stretch. Your body will thank you.  Continue to eat healthily and stay hydrated as it keeps stress levels down. Schedule some alone time daily for a long, relaxing bath and go to bed on schedule.
