Oakland, CA-How to Stay Resilient and Stress-Free During the Holidays, Hypnother…

BY: Your Name, Your Business

For some, Christmas is their favorite time of the year. For others, Christmas is more stressful than getting married, having a baby, or moving to your first house. Something about the holidays triggers these feelings, whether its memories of a lost family member or insecurities of not cooking the perfect feast.  However, Christmas can be whatever we make it if we stay resilient and mindful. These tips will help you have a stress-free holiday season.

  • Plan ahead and list all the things you want to do, the stuff you need to purchase, and your schedule. If possible, try to complete some early, such as pre-ordering photo Christmas Cards. Having them signed is one less step and if you use the same addresses each year, just re-print the labels. Sit down one night, listen to some holiday music and finish them up.
  • Consider forming new traditions. If you find you or a friend is alone this holiday season, start an “open house” policy on Christmas Eve. It can be casual and no one feels left out. Embrace new cultural experiences, such as attending a Children’s service together.
  • Set realistic expectations for yourself.  Don’t offer to cook an elaborate feast for your entire extended family. Instead, host a potluck dinner for only close friends and family, where everyone brings their favorite dish.
  • Shop carefully.  Plan a Christmas budget and stick to it. Not everyone needs the latest or high-tech gift. In addition, if the crowds at the holidays give you anxiety, then do your shopping online. It’s easy to find almost everything and sometimes you can even schedule delivery dates.
  • Allow your feelings. It’s okay to feel grief or loss over the death of a loved one, whether it was recent or years ago. You may feel lonely if you have family in the army or if you are estranged from close family and friends. Recognize these feelings, honor these people, and move on accordingly.
  • Use your support systems. Ask for help from family and community support systems before you become overwhelmed. If you don’t have a strong support system, consider volunteering at a local food bank or community center. Feeding the homeless or helping the elderly at a nursing home feeds your soul and often curbs your anxiety.
  • Take time for you daily. Each day, take time to start the day with meditation and end the day with a soothing bath and relaxing music. Even, if you’re running around, remember to eat healthily and bring your water bottle with you. Becoming dehydrated affects your stress levels.

Resilience is about finding the strength to handle Christmas and learn from past holiday mistakes. These tips should help you to have a less stressful holiday season.  For more help,  please contact us at (510) 949-8668.
