Sewer Surgeons received a call from a commercial restaurant owner in Pennsylvania. They were calling about some issues they were experiencing with their grease trap. It had malfunctioned and was causing them issues with their production of food, causing problems for their flow of productivity in the kitchen that ultimately lead to a poorer quality of service for their customers. The call was placed as quickly as possible to schedule an evaluation of their grease trap so a repair or possible replacement could be made as soon as possible and get the restaurant back up and running the way it should.

A couple of experienced professional Sewer Surgeon team members went to take a look at how things were. The business owner brought our team members to where the grease trap was located and elaborated on the issue. It appeared as if the grease trap had not been doing its job. Not only was it not trapping any additional grease, it was not permitting the flow of any other liquids as well. After hearing the account of the problem, we took a look.

What was discovered was that the grease trap had become more of a grease storage bin than a grease trap. One of the most important, yet most commonly missing, pieces of the grease trap was missing, the baffle. The grease was made to simply flow through the trap (without being trapped) and was getting washed into the grinder pumps and other parts that the grease did not belong in. This meant that a cleaning was in order before the baffle issue was addressed. After cleaning and removing all the displaced grease in the system, a baffle was made for the grease trap and some brackets were placed inside to hold it firmly in place.

Once the job was complete, the grease trap was closed back up and the business owner was informed about the importance of a baffle in the grease trap and why. The baffle works to collect grease, or trap it, while the water and other liquids pass through the trap. Without it, the whole system cannot function as it should.

In as little as a few hours the grease trap was cleaned and the baffle was inserted. Things were made to run much more smoothly for the restaurant with the grease trap repaired.
