Is it Better to Repair or Replace a Transmission?

BY: Henry Ma, M & R Automotive

At M & R Auto in Belmont, CA, we inspect a wide range of Mercedes-Benz vehicles with transmission issues. This might include shifting, delayed gear changes, and strange vibrations, which might leave you wondering if the transmission can be repaired, or if it needs total replacement.

The good news is a transmission inspection doesn’t automatically lead to a complete replacement. Our technicians identify the symptoms to determine whether the issue is related to the electronic components, hydraulic systems or internal mechanical parts. Having a suspected transmission problem diagnosed early in a 2012 Mercedes-Benz E350 reduces repair costs and the potential need for replacement.

Common Warning Signs of a Transmission Problem

One of the most common warning signs of a transmission problem in a Mercedes-Benz starts with shuddering or jerking when accelerating or changing gears quickly. This is often a sign the transmission is struggling to maintain proper hydraulic pressure or there’s an issue with the automatic clutch engaging.

For minor issues like contaminated or degraded transmission fluid, catching it early reduces repair costs. It might be as simple as a complete transmission fluid change.

In a more serious case, worn transmission components or electronic control problems are to blame for these irregular shifting behaviors. Though these can usually be addressed with a transmission repair or rebuild, without a total replacement.

Slipping Gears

Slipping gears is another common transmission issues drivers often notice when the engine revs higher than normal. This is usually a sign the Mercedes-Benz transmission is struggling to transfer power efficiently to the wheels to the point where it can no longer hold the selected gear.

Gear slipping like this might stem from worn clutch packs, valve body issues, low transmission fluid or serious electronic control failure. If it’s caught early, most of these underlying problems can be repaired.

Left unchecked, the gear slipping generates additional heat and wear throughout the transmission. Not only can this damage other components, but the gears can grind to the point where the transmission needs total replacement.

Hesitating Gear Changes

Delays in gear changes or the Mercedes-Benz transmission struggling to engage Drive or Reverse is another serious sign of a transmission problem. This often signals internal wear, fluid pressure problems or valve body concerns.

Caught early, a problem like this might be repaired without needing to replace the transmission. In some cases, just the torque converter needs to be replaced, and the transmission itself can be repaired.

Fluid Leaks

Fluid leaks are a common minor transmission problem, which can lead to a severe problem if they’re not caught early. A problem like this is common if you’ve recently tried to replace your own transmission fluid and tried to reuse the pan gasket seal, or over-tightened the bolts holding the fluid pan in place.

Left unnoticed, even a tiny leak will reduce fluid levels leading to grinding gears, and transmission overheating. This can severely damage other major components requiring a rebuild, major repair or total replacement.

Scheduling a Transmission Inspection

To determine if the transmission in your Mercedes-Benz can be repaired or needs to be replaced, you’ll first need a comprehensive inspection. At M & R Auto, we help Mercedes-Benz owners understand all the available options based on their budget, and the severity of the transmission problem. Call now to schedule an inspection before a minor issue turns into a major repair bill.
