Learn how to identify signs of a Lexus ES 350 with a bad serpentine belt. This includes symptoms such as stiff power steering, a battery warning light, and the engine running hot.
Yet these belts aren’t made to last forever, and eventually one starts to wear to the point of needing replacement. In a Lexus ES 350 this can manifest in a few different ways.
Squealing or chirping noises when you first start the engine or accelerate quickly is one of the earliest signs of a Lexus ES 350 with a bad serpentine belt. This is the belt slipping over one or more pulleys before finally getting enough traction to operate correctly.
When you hear a noise like this, the smart move is to pop the hood and perform a visual inspection. Look for small cracks, frayed edges, or missing chunks of rubber along the ribs of the serpentine belt. These are clear signs it’s losing structural integrity and needs to be replaced.
A Lexus ES 350 with stiff steering is another early sign of a failing serpentine belt. The power steering pump needs firm tension from the belt to maintain enough hydraulic pressure to help move the front tires when you turn the steering wheel.
You might also notice the engine seems to be running a little hotter than usual, especially in stop and go traffic. This is due to the water pump being underpowered by the failing serpentine belt. The pump then struggles to circulate engine coolant from the engine to the radiator, causing more heat to build up in the engine block.
When you drive at highway speeds the blast of airflow naturally helps take heat away from the engine. Then when you slow down in traffic, not only is there less airflow, but the water pump can’t move a sufficient volume of coolant, even when the radiator fan is running at full power.
A Lexus ES 350 with a bad serpentine belt might also start to develop strange electrical faults. Things like dim lights, weak power windows, and the battery dying for no reason are signs of the alternator failing to properly charge the battery.
Yet the alternator might be perfectly fine, but the serpentine belt is sliding over the pulley without fully activating the alternator. The added problem here is that a lead-acid battery left too long below 50% of maximum charge will start to degrade. So, even once you have the ES 350’s serpentine belt replaced, you might have the cost of a replacement battery added to the repair bill.
The good news is that if it’s caught early, it’s relatively inexpensive to replace the serpentine belt in a Lexus ES 350. After assessing the state of the belt, and testing all the affected components, our technicians use special tools to loosen the main tensioner pulley. We then replace the serpentine belt, tension it to factory specs, and test the entire system to make sure all the accessories are functioning properly.
If you’ve noticed symptoms of a worn-out serpentine belt with your Lexus ES 350, call M & R Automotive of Menlo Park, CA, to schedule an inspection. We’ll diagnose the state of the serpentine belt and all the related components, then replace the serpentine belt before it causes more costly repairs.
