Learn how dirty fuel injectors and carbon deposits on intake valves will affect an Audi A4's performance. We explain how fuel additives, carbon cleaning, or professional service could help.
This is usually due to either buildup on the intake valves, deposits fouling the fuel injectors or another engine problem. Sometimes it’s a combination of both valves and bad fuel injectors needing cleaning.
An Audi A4’s fuel injectors need to deliver a precise volume of fuel in a consistent spray to atomize with the air in the cylinder. Deposits inside or around an injector will start to interfere with this process, leading to uneven combustion in the cylinders.
This can even affect the timing of when a cylinder fires, causing a rough idle and other performance issues. You might even see a flashing check engine light when the engine misfires. This could even allow unburned fuel into the exhaust system, potentially damaging the catalytic converter.
Yet these same symptoms could be caused by other things such as worn spark plugs, faulty ignition coils, vacuum leaks, or sensor problems. This is where professional diagnosis will save you a lot of time and money, confirming if the problem truly is dirty fuel injectors.
If you catch it early, you might be able to clean the fuel injectors with a simple in-tank fuel additive. They’re made from high-quality polyetheramine, or PEA, which has been specially formulated to dissolve fuel-system deposits as the treated fuel passes through the system. The bottle will have instructions letting you know how much to add to your tank the next time you fill up.
However, these in-tank cleaners tend to be more of a preventive maintenance step meant to help deal with mild deposit concerns. It isn’t an effective substitute for professional fuel injector cleaning. Especially if there are also carbon deposits on the intake valves.
A lot of Audi A4 engines have direct fuel injection systems, meaning fuel enters the combustion chamber without passing over the back side of the intake valves. As time goes on, carbon deposits could start to gradually accumulate on the valves affecting the fuel-air mixture. In-tank fuel injector cleaner won’t help this problem, even if it manages to remove minor deposits from the Audi’s injector ports.
Our technicians inspect every aspect of the fuel delivery system, including injector flow and spray performance, as well as intake valve performance. This determines whether the injectors are delivering fuel consistently, and the valves are operating properly.
If injector cleaning is necessary, we’ll clean all the components responsible for delivering fuel to the cylinders. This includes thoroughly removing carbon deposits from the intake valves and making sure the fuel-air mixture is igniting on time.
If your Audi A4 has been running rough, hesitating, losing power, misfiring or showing signs of a fuel injector problem, contact M & R Automotive to schedule a professional inspection. We will determine the state of the fuel injectors and whether an in-tank injector cleaner will fix the problem or if the injectors and intake valves need professional cleaning.
