The VCM Oil Consumption Problem
Variable Cylinder Management, known as VCM, shuts down three cylinders under light load to save fuel. The system appears on J35 engines across MDX, TL, Odyssey, Pilot, and Accord V6 models from 2008 onward. The oil consumption issue comes from vacuum conditions in the deactivated cylinders pulling oil past the piston rings, which then fouls spark plugs, damages catalytic converters, and stresses engine mounts. Honda extended warranty coverage on some affected vehicles and, as recently as June 2025, issued additional extensions for certain Pilot and Odyssey model years.
