Pittsburgh, PA – Directional Signage Installed at Camp Kon-O-Kwee

BY: Alex Maurer, Spark Signs & Graphics
Camp Kon-O-Kwee asked us to update their wayfinding signage that had been in place for many years.  To solve their needs, we fabricated and installed identification and wayfinding signs and safety signage. Plus, our client wanted to honor Baierl Automotive, a sponsor of the new Aquatic Center and asked us to create a sign for the new pavilion.

The photos show the wayfinding signage that has an appearance of carved wood and that is painted forest green. Also, included is the Baierl Pavilion letter sign painted in the same forest green to match the other camp signage. Check out our album on Flickr to see all the signage we installed.

The YMCA Camp Kon-O-Kwee which runs almost entirely on individual donors and foundations believes that all people, regardless of age, ability, or circumstance should have access to a quality camp experience. So they strive to inspire and equip people to unlock their potential through a fun and exciting environment. The program runs all summer long and offers overnight camps for kids, weekend camps for adults with special needs, retreats, and parent-child programming.

To ensure our client’s needs were met, we met in the Spark Signs showroom to discuss product samples, and also performed multiple site surveys to identify wayfinding sign positioning and size. With regard to the wayfinding signage, the client wanted the signs to have an authentic wood grain appearance. So, we explored different wood-like materials with stability, longevity, and price being key factors. For the Baierl Pavilion, we shared several different sign types and landed on bold, clean letters. During this design stage, we sent numerous proofs back and forth to our client outlining the specific dimensions and verbiage of each sign to ensure we had full approval before moving into the fabrication stage.

For the Baierl sign, we utilized the YMCA font and fashioned the letters out of High-Density Urethane (HDU), a common material we use to make letter signs, and painted them a forest green to match the other camp signage. We installed the dimensional letters so they would be flush with the pavilion front wall.

We carved the wayfinding signage out of a material called Extira, which is used for exterior applications and performs better than wood because it resists moisture, rot, and termites. It was the perfect material to use for exterior signage in a camp setting.
