How an Outdoor Business Sign Actually Lasts

BY: Derrick Scheidel, Grand Rapids Sign Company

An outdoor sign’s long life is shaped at two places you can decide before it is ever built: the protective layer on the metal, and the detail where two different metals meet. Both are settled on paper, in the specification, well before anyone cuts material. A brand name on a quote says little about either one. What actually holds up outdoors is the corrosion protection on the structure and the corrosion-control detail at the joints. Get those two right, and you have specified durability by how it works.

The Zinc That Covers the Steel

Where an outdoor sign is built on a steel structure, that steel needs a corrosion-protection system suited to the assembly and its exposure. Hot-dip galvanizing is one such system: it bonds a zinc layer onto the steel, and that zinc can give sacrificial protection at small breaks in the coating. So where a later nick exposes a small area of steel, the surrounding zinc can still protect it. The point on the spec is to require a documented protection system and confirm the zinc coverage by inspection, rather than trusting a vague weather-resistant line. You are specifying a mechanism you can point to and inspect.

What a Coating Spec Should Name

Once the steel is protected, the visible finish still has to hold up outdoors, and a brand name settles little of that. A finish name is one word, and one word is no measure of how a coating holds up to sun and moisture. What you can actually check is the measured performance on its data sheet for your exposure: how it keeps color and gloss under strong sun, and how it stands up to steady damp off the lake. A single salt-spray figure is one lab test under one condition, and it does not fix how many years the finish lasts on your building. A brand name is quick to accept; the measured fields take a few minutes to read, and they are what tracks how a finish ages.

The Mixed-Metal Joint

An exposed joint where two different metals meet is one corrosion point you can inspect. Picture an aluminum panel bolted to a steel post with a steel fastener, out where rain and winter road spray reach the seam. Where two dissimilar metals touch with moisture or road salt between them, galvanic corrosion can take hold at that contact, and the more active of the two metals is the more vulnerable. Where the coating ends at the joint, that bare contact is also the kind of break where corrosion can begin and spread.

The fix is a detail decided before anyone cuts metal. A weather-exposed joint between two metals can be built with a compatible separation, or another engineered corrosion-control detail suited to the pair, to keep moisture from bridging the two. If the sign is illuminated, that same joint must not interrupt any required electrical bonding, which is why the detail is engineered and settled before fabrication. None of this can be read off a coating name or a warranty word, because the joint is a decision about which metals meet and how they are kept apart. Settle that joint before fabrication, and you have handled a corrosion risk that is hard to fix afterward.

Specify the Mechanism, Then Check the Site

Put those together, and the specification you actually need is short. Where the structure is steel, require a documented corrosion-protection system and confirm its coverage. Name the finish by the measured performance that matches your exposure. Then, at any weather-exposed joint where two different metals meet, name the corrosion-control detail for that pair. That is a specification you can hold a fabricator to, and none of it rests on a brand name.

The site matters too, because exposure can differ from one Grand Rapids location to another. A spot near the lake can stay damp, and along a salted winter route, road salt can add chloride to that moisture. If the sign is ground-mounted, the approach view and any local sign limits are worth settling before the base is set. Walk the spot yourself, or send it to Grand Rapids Sign Company, and we will match the spec to the site the sign will stand on.

The protective layer and the joint detail are both decisions, and both are easiest to get right before fabrication. Send us the site address, a few words on the exposure, whether it faces the lake, a salted road, or open sun, and the mounting or joint detail you have in mind. In a sign consultation, we can put the corrosion-protection approach and the joint detail into the spec before fabrication. Call us at (616) 284-8739, and we will help you specify an outdoor sign built for its site.
