Dizzy is a slippery word. People use it for about six different sensations, and that causes real problems when you’re trying to get help. You tell somebody you’re dizzy and they’ve got no idea what you mean. Room spinning? Head going light? Just wobbly on your feet? Three different problems. Three different causes. So the most useful thing you can do before an appointment is get specific about what you’re actually feeling.

Spinning Is Its Own Category

Room moves, you don’t. That’s vertigo, and it’s the most telling thing you can say. Real spinning points hard at the inner ear, where the system that tracks your head position has started feeding your brain bad information.

The details narrow it down more. Short, brutal bursts set off by rolling over in bed or tipping your head back? That’s usually the crystal type, and it responds really well to guided repositioning. Longer spells with nausea, maybe after you’ve been sick, point somewhere else in the ear. Either way, spinning is a strong clue. Say it plainly if that’s what you’ve got.

Lightheaded Is a Different Animal

If it’s more like your head going empty, or that woozy thing when you stand up too fast, that’s usually not the inner ear at all. Lightheadedness tends to trace back to blood pressure, hydration, medication, or something systemic.

The distinction matters. Vestibular therapy goes after the balance system. It won’t touch a blood pressure issue. Getting your description right early points you toward the right help instead of burning a few weeks on the wrong track.

Unsteady Is Its Own Thing Again

Then there’s just feeling off balance, no spinning anywhere in it. You’re not dizzy exactly. You just don’t trust your feet. Walking feels like drifting. Uneven ground throws you. So does a dark hallway.

This one usually comes from a balance system that’s dulled over the years. Could be the inner ear, could be your vision, could be the sensors in your joints that tell you where your body is. It responds well to balance and gaze training, which is exactly what vestibular therapy does.

How Therapy Uses What You Describe

What you say shapes the whole evaluation. The therapist takes it from there, watching your eyes, testing your balance, moving your head into different positions to see what sets the symptoms off. Put that together with your description and the cause usually shows itself.

Then treatment matches it. Guided repositioning for the crystal kind, which often settles things in a visit or two. Gaze and habituation work for a system that needs retraining. Balance training for the unsteady type. Different problems, different fixes, which is why that first description carries so much weight.

One Thing Not to Wait On

Dizziness with a sudden bad headache, slurred speech, weakness, numbness, or vision going strange needs emergency care right now. That combination is pointing somewhere other than your inner ear, and it shouldn’t wait on a therapy appointment.
