Fort Myers, FL — Diamond Certification Appraisals for Antique Heirlooms

Somewhere in a Fort Myers dresser drawer sits a diamond ring nobody has appraised in forty years. Maybe it’s yours. Nobody knows the carat weight, the clarity, or whether that stone is even a diamond. An appraisal answers those questions with documentation you can actually use.

Certification and Appraisal Are Two Different Things

People mix these up constantly, and it matters.

A certification grades the stone itself. Cut, color, clarity, carat weight. It comes from a gemological lab and describes what the diamond is. It does not assign a dollar value.

An appraisal assigns value. It considers the stone, the setting, the age, the craftsmanship, and current market conditions. Insurance companies want appraisals. Estate attorneys want appraisals. Buyers want certifications.

For an antique heirloom, you often need both.

Why Antique Diamonds Get Valued Differently

Old diamonds were cut by hand. An old mine cut or old European cut looks nothing like a modern round brilliant. The proportions are different. The facets are chunkier. They flash in candlelight instead of sparkling under LED.

That changes the math. Some collectors pay a premium for original antique cuts. Recutting an old stone to modern proportions can actually destroy value, even though the “grade” might improve on paper. An appraiser who understands antique jewelry knows this. One who doesn’t might tell you your great-aunt’s ring is worth less than it is.

The setting matters too. Original Edwardian platinum work or Victorian gold craftsmanship adds value that a generic appraisal can miss entirely.

When You Should Get an Appraisal

There are a few moments when paperwork stops being optional:

  • Adding a piece to your homeowner’s or jewelry insurance
  • Dividing an estate fairly among family members
  • Considering a sale and wanting a realistic starting number
  • Updating an old appraisal, since values shift over time
  • Confirming a stone’s identity before any repair work

Insurance is the big one. If that ring disappears in a break-in and you have no appraisal on file, you’re negotiating from memory. That rarely goes well.

What Happens During the Appointment

The stone gets examined under magnification, measured, and tested. If it’s mounted, some measurements are estimates until it comes out of the setting, and a careful appraiser will tell you that plainly. You’ll get a written document with photos, descriptions, and a stated value with the date and purpose noted.

Plan on updating it every few years. Diamond and gold markets move, and a 1995 appraisal won’t hold up with your insurer today.

Know What You’re Holding

An unappraised heirloom is a question mark. It might be worth more than you think. It might be worth less. Either way, knowing beats guessing.

Judy’s Jewelry helps Fort Myers families put real numbers and real documentation behind the pieces they’ve inherited. Call the shop to set up an appraisal appointment and finally learn what that drawer has been holding all these years.
