Yes, a gold ring that spins on your finger or stops at the knuckle can be sized to fit again. At Judy's Jewelry in Fort Myers, we resize jewelry in-house, and we repair jewelry as well. If your ring slides on easily on a cool January morning and sticks by August, your finger has changed size with the season. Sizing works at the bottom of the band, so the setting on top of your ring stays as you know it.
Why Your Finger Changes Size Through The Year
Heat and humidity leave fingers a little swollen and larger than normal, and cold weather leaves them smaller. Here in Fort Myers, the summer is long and humid, and winter brings a short run of cooler mornings. If your ring was sized on a chilly day, it can feel snug in July. Sized in the heat, the same ring can spin by January.
When a ring fits well, it slides over the knuckle with a little friction and then sits comfortably on the finger. If your ring has to be twisted hard to pass the knuckle, it is smaller than your finger needs. A ring that turns freely and slides toward the knuckle on its own is larger than your finger needs. When the knuckle is wider than the base of the finger, small sizing beads or a spring insert fitted inside the band can keep a ring that clears the knuckle from spinning.
Wide Bands And Narrow Bands Fit Differently
The width of your band changes how a size feels on the finger. Wider bands, from about 6mm across, fit more snugly than a narrow band of the same size. Your wide gold wedding band can feel tight in a size that is comfortable in a slim stacking ring. The inside shape counts too, and a comfort-fit band, rounded on the inside, feels a little roomier than a flat-inside band of the same size.
What Sizing Changes At The Bottom Of The Band
The band of a ring is called the shank, and a resize happens at its bottom center. To size up, the shank is cut at that spot. If the ring was sized before, the cut goes through the old seam instead. Into the gap goes a short piece of gold matched to the band's karat and color. Sizing down removes a small section from the same spot, and the ends are joined again. Before any heat, a heat-sensitive stone such as an emerald is taken out, or the shank is bent cold with shank benders so no flame reaches it.
Filing and polishing then bring the band back to its own contour. Most white gold carries a thin plating of rhodium, so a white gold ring is usually replated after sizing to give the seam the same bright finish as the band. When possible, the cut is placed away from any karat stamp inside the band, so the mark stays readable.
A Thin Band Can Be Made Sturdy Again
Gold worn every day thins at the bottom of the band over the years. That is the same spot a resize opens. If your wedding band looks narrower on the palm side than on top, you are seeing that wear. When the thinning stays at the bottom, only that half of the band is replaced with matching gold, a repair called a half shank. The top of the ring, with its setting and stones, stays in place.
Rings That Take More Planning To Resize
Plain gold bands and solitaire rings have open metal at the bottom of the shank, which is where a resize is made. An eternity band set with stones all the way around has no plain metal there to cut, so some eternity bands stay in the size they were made. A tension setting holds its stone by the pressure of the band itself, so resizing that ring means rebuilding the shank. On a band with a channel of small diamonds, the channel changes shape along with the band, so those stones come out and are set again. The size of the change matters too, and a change within about two sizes up or down keeps a band and its setting in proportion.
