A dermatologist practice in the East Bay Area reached out to Ergobility as the staff were experiencing discomfort related to patient handling activities, and tasks involving awkward postures and of high duration. The outcome of the consultation resulted in a tremendous improvement in ergonomic risks since the staff are generally understaffed for the amount of physical demands required. The focus was on patient handling assist devices, a chair that would allow skin related treatments to be performed with ease, and the type of shoes to wear daily on a hard surface. The space consisted of a reception area with customer seating and a reception desk. There were three treatment rooms providing various skin treatments such as laser therapies, injections, etc. The rooms had a patient bed and the medical equipment was on wheels around the bed area. There was one particularly larger room which was sought to be the room with the patient handling equipment. The patient handling equipment would need to be on wheels since there was not the possibility of an overhead rig. Most hospitals use the brand Hillrom which makes such equipment which can lift even patients of size. The accessories that attached to the patients depend on the body part(s) that need to be positioned, the patient mobility level, and the patient size. Straps that would allow the patient to be rolled to the side were of the primary concern in this case, however, also the limbs of the patient would also need to be raised. The bed already was sufficiently height adjustable. However, during operations the dermatologist needs to flex their shoulder reaching forward for significant duration during procedures. This is why a specific chair which allows support of the elbows when the shoulder is in flexion was recommended. It allows the back to also be supported in a more upright position. This allows for the dermatologist to have sufficient access to their patient when performing skim procedures all while supporting their arms. Footwear is very important, especially in an environment that has hard flooring. Such environments include the hospital setting or other healthcare settings where clean-ability and sanitization are essential. In these settings, nurses and other healthcare professionals prefer a shapely sole (occasionally orthotics) and soles with significant padding and elasticity. This takes the place of soft surfaces. Most of the time, in these industries, standing mats are not a sound solution.
