A neighbor was asking me about my new home computer workstation setup. Before for about half a year I was crunching through my remote job like a pro without a care at my dining room table and chair using only a laptop and the Apple Magic Mouse. I was so productive and loved the view from my dining room out to the back yard with lots of trees and can even hear the birds singing. I was also so close to my child so whenever he needed anything I was right there to assist being the good mom I am.
A big “however” came though right at about the 7 month mark. I started experiencing numbness going down my left arm. I’m right handed and usually don’t use that arm so much so I thought maybe I been sleeping wrong on it. I asked my MD what they thought may be the cause and they asked quickly about my work setup. I mentioned what I did and they told me to get a “proper ergonomic workstation” especially at home. I said to myself well, I’m pretty comfortable at my dining room table although I knew in the back of my mind that my back was barely touching the back of the chair most of my day and I was slowing by the end of the day leaning all over my table with my back round in some sort of fetal position!
Then I went online to do some product research. I looked up chairs, desks, stands, etc. So many products cheap and expensive were advertising as “ergonomic” but I knew that that word got thrown around way too much in the furniture industry. I also knew that ergonomics is about things fitting you properly. So something that would be great for a tall larger man wouldn’t be the right product for me!
So I looked for an ergonomic consultant but didn’t want to do it virtually. I needed someone to actually come to my home and help me out. Watch me work and make suggestions to improve my postures so that my progression of numbness and discomfort could be stopped. I looked for one of the top ergonomic consultants in the Bay Area from Ergobility. They came out within a week and helped me get the ideal setup which over just a few months helped the issue with my left arm go completely away. I told my neighbor as well about the ergonomic consultant because they were just like me 3 months before.
