I get asked by a lot of high level professionals what regulations are set around the ergonomics for various industries in California. The quick answer is as simple as do no harm. The OSH Act of 1970 states that: "To assure safe and healthful working conditions for working men and women; by authorizing enforcement of the standards developed under the Act; by assisting and encouraging the States in their efforts to assure safe and healthful working conditions; by providing for research, information, education, and training in the field of occupational safety and health; and for other purposes." This act is as important as the OSHA requirements around the injury and illness prevention policy which is aimed at mitigating injuries in the workplace through investigation and controls. It also takes responsibility for factors that can cause harm to employees and ensures that economical factors are moral. In addition to the regulations around industrial hygiene that define ergonomic risk factors and how much exposure would be "too much" to which the job demands would be exceeding the capabilities of the human body to endure. The regulation also makes a mention that categorizes ergonomic related cumulative disorders. In summary, it states that if more than two workers in a year, report a cumulative related injury (discomfort) associated with the workplace within a year, the employer has to have an effective ergonomics program that aims at identifying the factors that would cause these cumulative related injuries and create a program, or plan of action, to mitigate the risks. Most companies have no expertise in ergonomics specifically, so they typically fall on hiring an external ergonomic evaluation specialist or ergonomics consultant to help build and maintain an effective ergonomics program. Ergonomic consultants may also help your company identify specific reasons why a current ergonomics program may fall short of true effectiveness. The failsafe way to go is to look for a specialist with a Certified Professional Ergonomics (CPE) certification which is the highest accredited certification in the ergonomics field. It ensures that the ergonomic evaluations and their prevention measures are consistent with NIOSH rules and recommendations. The best practice is to follow regulations but we all know that it takes going beyond just checking off all the boxes when it comes to workplace safety and ergonomics. Injury and illness prevention is about building a foundation and culture throughout your workplace and the end result is very rewarding for any business.
