Most ergonomic risk assessments in the industrial space are completed by observing the employee and completing one or multiple quantitative, semi-quantitively, or qualitative assessments. Having both an objective and experienced staff member or consultant perform these assessments is hard to find. Some businesses have moved to using artificial intelligence (AI) to best objectively perform these assessments. An experienced ergonomist may even use the AI tools to assist them as well. There are other AI tools that are used by ergonomic consultants. Another tool is the AI-Based 3D Motion Capture methods. This used to be 2D but nowadays the technology has made strides and having trunk movements are able to be accurately mapped. These tools refer to the datasets from research performed in the field and compare them to the threshold limit values set by the Americal Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygiene (ACGIH). These limits are known values that help researchers and practitioners understand what tasks and actions performed on the job site are "at risk" and what is relatively low enough risk to not warrant spending money on solutions. These quantitative methods create a clear path to improvements and explaining needs to upper management. One such new methodology is the AI driven SIRA to which EMG and multi-camera video data were combined to understand how posture, durations, and weights of manipulated items relate to musculoskeletal risk factors. Taking video is straight forward to which frame and following the worker in the video field. A clear shot of both of the worker's hands ideally from an isometric angle is best. Also, it's important to minimize other workers in the background and to accurately capture the task being performed. SIRA is an application that can be used in the field. It's still somewhat a prototype at this point and is continuously being improved. It is checked for accuracy and needs to be calibrated. AI based video capture can be extended to standard ergonomic assessments used to evaluate lifting and lowering such as the NIOSH lifting equation, rapid upper body assessment (RULA), and rapid entire body assessment (REBA). Possibly even more that these but really anything to which posture and biomechanics would be involved in the assessment. Not so much a static based workstation. Also, understanding the risks is only half of the ergonomic assessment. The practitioner would need to be experienced at effective solutions to reduce the risks while looking to also improve workflow efficiency.
