Onsite ergonomic job risk analysis for companies.

An ergonomic job hazard analysis is a technique used by ergonomic professionals, typically ergonomic consultants, that aims on quantifying ergonomic related risks of a job both quantitatively and qualitatively. It focuses on the relationship between the worker and the task including how and what tools are used as well as other factors of the work environment including forces applied, reach, and other physical and mental related demands. The idea behind doing such an analysis is that it services as doing due diligence in case a workers compensation claim were to be filed. Having broken down the risks with a consulting specialist that is versed at understanding the ergonomic risk factors present at a workstation would be a no brainer because it is the only way to control the hazards. If you haven't identified the problem points, you as an employer are shooting in the dark. So in a way, the ergonomic specialist helps companies not only fix hazards, but just by identifying them, typically the employer is at least able to focus efforts or systems already in place to ensure workers are safe. When you ask employees sometimes what the most difficult part of their job is, they don't always identify the physical issues accurately. Let me give you a simple example of a computer worker at a standard height desk. One of the most common issues with fixed height desks are that they end up too high for employees. Employees that keep their chair at the correct height (assuming they do not have a footrest) on the floor planted find that they have to flex their shoulders to reach over the top of the desk to use their keyboard. This then encourages them to place their entire forearms on top of the desk surface. Although this causes a variety of posture and biomechanics related issues, the employee finds this to be the most comfortable way to work. The desk height is the issue, but since the employee is leaning onto the desk they start to feel shoulder and neck pain. So they identify the issue with the monitor. This is how mistakes occur in the workplace and they are common. It is always best to consult an ergonomic specialist that will identify the issues correctly and efficiently for employer. Even using software or having minorly trained ergonomists in house does not always work. So be careful, if you need assistance finding a great ergonomic specialist in your area, reach out to Ergobility today.
