SYNOPSIS: The best part about getting movement is that it shields you from developing a musculoskeletal disorder (MSD). The first thing to consider is blood flow and our body's ability to recharge itself.

The key benefit of movement is the sometimes unforeseen benefits of reducing the changes of developing a musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) or also known as a repetitive strain injury (RSI). Generally speaking, we all should be getting more frequent bouts of movement if you work a sedentary job. Even if you have a standing desk, you would still be in a sedentary standing position when using this tool. This article explains how getting exercise at the end of a full workday can help prevent the cumulative nature of a MSD.

The first thing we need to see things is in the perspective of blood flow. Our blood helps transport valuable nutrients such as energy, building blocks, and oxygen to our tissues but what is lesser known is how increased blood flow from exercise can also help reduce inflammatory factors and strengthen our immune system. This is why ergonomic specialists emphasize the importance of stretching, drinking plenty of water, and movement to increase blood flow real time during the workday. Most ergonomic injuries arise from repetitive or durational activities that also have cofactors involved such as awkward postures or static postures.

We need to consider our bodies as somewhat of a battery that needs a recharge everyday as well. Therefore, it’s important to rest as well but also think of the repetitive stresses we put on our tissues which do not fully recover. So exercise helps increase the full capacity of these batteries in a way by increasing our abilities to handle the stress loads we place on them day in and day out.

Our bodies need a balance. Just as you wouldn’t want to go on a weeklong bender, you don’t want to over do it with work. Planning ahead and trying to keep a consistent schedule can help you achieve such a thing. It’s expected that we will procrastinate from time to time, however, consistently doing this will cause issues that are not easy to recover from.

The concern with MSDs is that once they develop, our habits and the techniques we employ when using a computer workstation will likely not allow the issue to heal unless we unplug. An unfortunate impractical solution a lot of times for busy moms and technology moguls, etc.

So if you have a team that could use a group training or onsite evaluations from an ergonomic specialist that can coach on prevention of MSDs and boost overall employee heath contact Ergobility today!
