Take a Self-Assessment Training Program Contact your  Local Ergonomist Here Your job productivity depends on many things–but most employers and employees don't know that your efficiency and efficacy in work are highly influenced by your workplace environment, equipment, and system. Yes, that's right, it has been observed by scientists and researchers that your comfort, protection, and health are affected by the efficiency of the equipment and systems you use – and that highly influences how productive you are at work. This research and understanding gave birth to a lesser-known branch called ergonomics. Ergonomics is the study of workplace equipment to ensure they provide an optimum environment for employees to work and perform. It is the process of arranging and designing workplace systems, equipment, and products to make sure people who are using them are fit for them and feel relaxed, comfortable, and safe using them. Ergonomics aims to ensure employees can give their best to their work. Now how do ergonomists determine whether the office equipment is appropriate for use by employees and whether their environment meets the requirements? Well, they have tests and assessments that help them determine this – and the most popular among them is the self-assessment. What is an Ergonomic Self Assessment? An ergonomic assessment – especially the self-assessment- helps determine whether the worker and their workstation allow for optimum productivity and health. The test considers workstation set-up and helps identify whether you have the right working posture. The purpose of “self-assessment" is that you can complete the test yourself, at ease and in your own time. A professional ergonomics consultant then generates a complete evaluation report to address the issues. This will include instructions and adjustments related to your workstation, such as your furniture – that are specific to you and your needs. Who Needs an Ergonomics Self-Assessment? Ergonomics self-assessment is for all types of employees, those designated in the office and those working from home. Whether you have a designated workspace or travel often – it is a part of orientation that helps people get support with setting up their workspace efficiently. Moreover, employers also encourage their employees to get an ergonomist self-assessment, ensuring their productivity and efficiency at work. Elements of an Ergonpmist Self Assessement An ergonomist self-assessment is like a checklist that includes all the different equipment and pieces of furniture present in your workspace. The checklist identifies what condition these items in your workstation are arranged to help you determine whether they are in appropriate condition or not. For example, the office chair is an important element of the ergonomist self-assessment. You will find several questions about the office chair, such as: "Are your feet fully supported by the floor when you are seated?” or  “Does your chair provide support for your lower back?" Along with these questions, it gives you some suggested actions to help you reach optimal comfort and performance.
