Ergonomic Guidelines & Tips from an East Bay Area

Businesses thrive when their workforce feels valued and cared for. And the best way to do so is by investing in the expertise of a trained ergonomist. Here are a few tips by reliable ergonomists to elevate your employee’s workstation setup. It is rightly said that an organization is only as good as its employees. Indeed, the growth and development of any business rely on the hard work and dedication put forth by its employees. Most business owners underestimate how a worker’s physical and mental well-being impacts productivity and work efficiency. Choosing to invest in the health of your employees is the key to setting your organization on the fast track to success. A surefire way to ensure workplace health is by implementing guidelines recommended by ergonomic experts. What is Ergonomics? Ergonomics is the art of designing a workplace and its stations in a way that boosts productivity and comfort while enhancing performance. Ergonomists aim to create work spaces that encourage employees to work at their best and nurture their potential. If done right, an ergonomic assessment can elevate the everyday working experience and increase efficiency by tenfold. Tips by Expert Ergonomists Our professionals at Ergobility value the health of your colleagues above all else. We aim to help you establish a workplace that benefits your business and employees alike. Here are a few tips to get you started:
  1. Avoid exercises that exert mechanical stress on arms and take small breaks between tasks requiring pinch gripping and hand grasping. If you perform the same motion or motion pattern for long durations, learn to take 60-second breaks to stretch and relax.
  2. Avoid using vibrating and impact tools or equipment for more than 1 hour at a time. If your job requires you to lift heavy weights or tackle bulky objects, make sure to learn the right techniques as the potential for back injury increases with each lift.
  3. Opt for stable, mobile, swivel chairs that provide operator movement, and have an adjustable arm. Ensure that all station chairs are equipped with proper arm support. If the weight of your arms isn’t balanced, your neck and shoulder muscles will be sore by the end of the day.
  4. Chairs should also have a comfortable neck and lower-back support, ensuring that the head is positioned just above the base of the neck and not craned forward. Use adjustable supports that can easily be moved up, down, forwards, and back.
  5. A computer station should be designed in a way that can accommodate the unique needs of every individual. Furniture like a chair, work surfaces, tables, and document holders should be adjustable so the user can position them according to their preference.
  6. The placement of the monitor should be no higher than eye level so that the user doesn’t have to bend or raise their head to view the screen. All required equipment, including the keyboard, mouse, stationery, and paperwork, should be within arm’s reach to prevent strain from excessive reaching.
  7. For increased productivity, remember to keep moving and exercising in between work hours. To relax your eyes, look at a distant point every other hour. For the body, stretch your neck, shoulders, back, legs, and arms at least twice for 5-10 minutes daily.
