Has work productivity gone down due to poor employee performance? It’s time to hire an ergonomic expert to analyze your workplace environment! Overtime shifts and extended sittings have now become the norm for businesses and organizations. The outdated 9-to-5 shift is not enough for them to grow and prosper. It also means employees have to put in more effort in order to get noticed and become an integral part of the company. However, extended working hours do not have the desired effect! An average employee spends around 10 hours per day sitting in a chair in front of a laptop or computer. The continuous exposure to electronic devices has led to various health-related problems, leading to poor work performance. Proper Office Ergonomics For a company to succeed, they need their workforce in their best condition. But poor ergonomic practices are hindering the progress of the company and its employees. Here are some proper office ergonomic practices to consider: Height of the Desk: Office workspaces are designed to facilitate long hours of sitting, which is harmful for the back and neck if the position is unfavorable. A person should keep the desk to be at or below elbow height. If the desk is too high and can’t be adjusted, they can raise the chair and add a footrest to achieve the best ergonomic position. Placement of Chair: Chair placement is also important to avoid injuries. Therefore, a person should get a comfortable chair that has solid back support and padded cushions. They can adjust the chair to match the desk height by adding cushions or folded towels on the seat. The best ergonomic position for sitting in a chair is feet flat with thighs parallel to the floor and back against the chair. Placement of Devices: After adjusting the desk and chair, it’s time to focus on placing the keyboard, mouse, and monitor to match the desired height. The keyboard and mouse are to be placed 2 to 3 inches from the edge of the desk right in front of the person sitting in a chair. The monitor should be centered and in line with the keyboard. The best distance is an arm’s length from the desk’s front edge. Screen height can be the same as eye level or slightly below, depending on the preference or comfortability of the person.
