To control the spread of COVID-19, many Americans are now working from home. Kitchen tables and bedrooms have been transformed into home offices. The conditions most of them are working in are definitely not ergonomic conditions. Either the chair is too low or the kitchen table is too high due to which your wrists, arms, feet, neck and the entire body are constantly under stress.

Here are some tips and tricks to help you create a workstation at home that is ergonomic.

Do Not Bend Over Your Laptop

Working on your laptop for a few hours over the weekend while sitting in bed is doable but putting in 40 hours a week from the bed will definitely lead to strain on your back, neck, and shoulder. Using another monitor or laptop stand to prop up your screen with an added keyboard and mouse is a good option. When you look at the screen, your eyes should be at the same level as the top of your screen.

Work At an Appropriate Height

When working, find the optimum height where your elbows are level with your desk’s height. This will ensure your wrist is aligned better, and less of a risk of carpal tunnel syndrome.

An Office Chair Is a Good Investment

You can avoid lumbar and neck discomfort by making use of the adjustable features on an office chair.

Revamp Your Current Chair

If you can’t get an office chair right now, that’s understandable. There are some ways you can adjust the chair and ensure it is better suited for you. A firm cushion or a tightly folded tower under your buttocks would increase the curve of your spine, and raise your hips making sitting for long periods more comfortable.

Dangling Feet Are a No

Do not let your dangle feet or it would affect your spine. You could add a few books or boxes under your desk to place your feet on so that your hips are higher than your knees and your thighs are close to being parallel to the floor.

The 20/20/20 Rule

This rule is pretty basic but helps reduce eye strain and gives your eye muscles a well-deserved break. For every twenty minutes that you spend looking at the screen, spend at least twenty seconds looking at something else in the distance, at least twenty feet away.

Your Couch Is Not Your Workstation

Working from your couch is very tempting, we get it. But it is not the best place to work from for the whole day. Even though it is comfortable, your legs or entire body being in a vertical position could lead to discomfort and muscle numbness.

Lunch and Hydration Are Key

While working from home, snacking during the day instead of eating like you did at the office is easier. While you make a meal for yourself and stay hydrated, you get a chance to stand up from your desk, walk around, and gives yourself a break from the computer screen.
