In the signage world, we are constantly striving to resolve our customers problems. While a large part of working in signage is trying to get businesses noticed and creating signage that will attract potential customers to the business, but there is so much more to it than that! We are constantly working to help solve challenges that business’s have, and we can accomplish some of these issues with the use of specialty materials.
We worked with a client in Baltimore that had an issue with a steam vent just outside the entrance to the facility. They couldn’t block off the vent so we decided on a form of chimney. The customer provided a steel “cage” for us to skin in .090 aluminum and also have an access door that locks to that the vent can be accessed for any maintenance. But we can’t just leave this as an aluminum tower. We wrapped the unit with a high performance vinyl graphic with the Baltimore flag printed on the vinyl. The customer was concerned of the possibility of vandals painting on the unit. We solved that issue with an anti-graffiti laminate that allows any paint or markers to be cleaned with a mild solvent. Problem solved and a great looking install.
We had a client that wanted their logo placed on and inside recovery pools for a special event. Sounds simple, but the recovery pools were to contain ice water and athletes will be going in and out of the portable inflatable pools all day long. So we performed testing for the appropriate vinyl that had found a high tack vinyl that can withstand the high traffic in a pool of 40deg water. We solved the problem with a high tack 3M material and created decals to be placed around the outside perimeter of the pool as well as on the inside floor of the pool. The stickers held up well for not only the one planned event, but they also used them for several other subsequent events.
Some other materials that are great for specific problems are slip resistant vinyl laminates for floor graphics. Not only are they slip resistant but they are very durable for foot traffic. Make sure you request a material that is a UL410 listed or ASTM D-2407 tested material which indicates that this is a material that has been tested and meets anti skid requirements.
More recently there are anti-microbial laminates that provide an extra level of protection in transmission of bacteria. In today’s environment and for the foreseeable future, there will be a high level of focus on providing a clean and sanitary environment for office space, restaurants and public spaces. Antimicrobial laminates help to minimize the risk of cross-contamination. This makes them perfect for use in hygiene-critical environments such as hospitals, food processing facilities, and schools.
