What is an illuminated sign?
An illuminated sign is exactly what it sounds like: a sign that is lit. The lighting methods, applications and usages of illuminated signs are versatile making them customizable to individual business needs.
The most common lighting methods for signage are LED’s, fluorescent bulbs and neon bulbs. Today more and more businesses are opting into LED lighting due to the longer lasting and more efficient nature of LEDs. With this shift many businesses are choosing to retrofit their existing cabinet to LEDs to capitalize on the new technology.
Lighting methods also allow for a diverse appearance. Back-lit panels are common for businesses exterior signage. These signs have lighting within them and the light glows through the front of the sign. Front-lit signs are common as well and simply put have lighting on the sign from the front. Spotlights are a common front-lighting technique. Channel letters are another common type of illuminated sign and can be front or back-lit. Halo lighting is another common option for signage. Halo lighting is where the face of the sign is opaque and the sign is standing off from the wall so the lighting creates a halo behind the letters.
Illuminated signs are not exclusive to exterior signs. While exterior applications of back-lit signs panels and font or back-lit channel letters are commonplace, various illuminated sign types are becoming common within offices. Whether for a lobby, a conference room or the heart of the business; illuminated signs demand a level of attention that other sign types don’t allow.
Why choose illuminated signs?
It is important for your sign to stand out. You are competing for potential customers so it is imperative for you to stand out from all the other messaging in the area. And not only standing out but creating a memorable image so that that prospect will remember your sign. In many areas you are only allowed to have one sign, so how do you attract the attention of those potential customers? That is the job of an illuminated sign. First of all, regardless of the design, illuminated signs provide visibility not only during the day time but also make you visible at night. Channel letter signs are attention-grabbing, while illuminated cabinet signs are budget-friendly and highly customizable. You can add a touch of sophistication with lighting elements on a monument sign, especially if you are placing the sign in front of a business or complex that is open late into the evening.
What are some of the options for illuminated signs?
Standard illuminated Sign Cabinet
These are a square or rectangular sign cabinet with a translucent front panel with translucent colored or digitally printed vinyl applied to the face. These signs are a budget friendly illuminated sign option that offer maximum square footage display and are typically less expensive for installation.
Reverse cut out panel
Similar to our standard illuminated sign cabinet but features letters or shapes cut out of an aluminum face and a translucent acrylic backer in your colors. Low voltage LEDs assembled inside light up the cut-out shape or letters. It provides some dimension to the sign as well as a more focused image.
Reverse cut, push-through acrylic letters
Very similar to the Reverse cut out panel with an added dimensional effect. The letters and logo are cut out of the face as with the reverse cutout panel but we add raised acrylic letters pushed through the face. It’s completed with a translucent acrylic backer in your colors. Low voltage LEDs assembled inside light up the push thru acrylic letters.
Fabricated backlit letters or front lit letters typically called Channel letters.
Fabricated letters are assembled to either have a translucent face that is illuminated through the front or a solid face and mounted off the wall 1″-2″ to allow light to shine through the back onto the wall. The front lit letters can be mounted directly to the wall or on a race way. The raceway requires less holes in the building and typically are less expensive to install. The back lit letters are individually mounted to the wall or can be mounted to a preassembled aluminum pan to provide a background color or graphic for more impact.
