A question I get very frequently is where should I place my sign? Let’s answer this question for three different types of sings.
First let’s talk about the outdoor sign (many times a lighted sign) over your establishment. You should try to maximize the line of site and readability of your sign. Maximize your line of site by placing your sign where you can see it by the most number of people passing by. This may not always be the place you first thought. Do you get a majority of foot traffic or car traffic? Are you near an intersection? The answers to these questions should help you decide where you put your sign. To maximize readability insure that letter height is appropriate for the distance the average potential customer will see your sign from. If you have to put less verbiage to increase letter size please do so!
Secondly we can talk about portable outdoor signage such as tear drop flags or sandwich boards. Your goals here are the same. Maximize the number of potential customers viewing your sign and ensuring it is 100% readable. You may also want to put a call to action on it to help increase the number of people responding to your sign (Come in now for a free drink with purchase of sandwich and fries!). If you have significant foot traffic you may also want to consider changing the message often. This gives people who walk by often something new to look at…maybe one of those calls to action will change them into a impulse customer!
And finally we will talk about indoor signage, such as a corporate logo sign. These types of signs usually take center stage in your reception area. They should be placed where new visitors coming in can get a clear view of the sign. If your reception area doubles as a waiting area you may want to consider providing a clear view to the sign while people wait or in some cases a second sign. Don’t forget that this is one more item potential customer will use to judge your business before you have a chance to speak with them.
