This is a question that we are commonly asked. I’ll limit this discussion to outdoor signs for this article.
The single most important answer is VISIBILITY! You want everyone in the area to know where you are located. If people don’t know where you are located, how are supposed to find you (besides Google maps!) To increase your visibility there are three things you should consider:
One, make your sign as large as possible. Limiting factors may be village ordinances, the size of your building, etc. Go big! Although big signs are more expensive than large signs they are more visible and readable from a further distance. Think of your sign as a LONG term investment, how much more will it cost over 10-20 years?
Two, mount it as high as you can. By placing the sign as high as possible you increase the distance your sign can be seen from. The higher it is, the less likely to be blocked by parked vehicles, ground traffic, etc.
Three, consider your surrounding area. Walk your property and your neighbor’s property. Consider where your new sign will provide the most visibility. Are there trees that have no leaves right now that may interfere in the summer? Visibility is the key, so take a walk, take the view in and imagine your sign. If you were shopping, would you see it?
Each situation is unique so it will require some thought.
