The Importance of Signs
Most people do not give signage a tremendous amount of thought. While starting up a business there are hundreds if not thousands of things a new business owner must attend to. Sometime signage is one of the last things they may consider.
1) Your outdoor sign may be the first impression you ever make on a customer. Customers driving or walking by may see your sign and make a judgment about your business without ever hearing a word from your mouth.
a. New business – It is important to get the design right. Can you see it from the street? Can you see it from the corner where traffic builds up. What colors are the lit up at night, are they visible from the distance you would like it visible from?
b. Established business – Is your sign tired looking? Does it promote you or make you look like you don’t care about your image? Has your business evolved from when you first purchased your sign; has technology transformed your business?
2) Your indoor signs – do they stay consistent to your brand identity or do they confuse the consumer
a. New business – Take the time to ensure your signs are consistent with your brand
i. Keep your corporate colors consistent
ii. Keep your logo consistent
iii. Don’t create new tag lines that aren’t a continuation of the brand
b. Established business – does your signage reflect your current selling environment
i. Does your signage reflect the items listed above
ii. Are your signs in good repair or do they reflect poorly on your image
iii. Could your messages change due to the changing demographics of your customers
3) Promotional Signs – On site
a. New Business – Promotional signs placed outside your business are important in getting attention
i. Do you have a sandwhich board or tear drop flags to attract attention
ii. Do you have a grand opening banner?
iii. Are you using your window space properly to advertise your wares and specials
b. Established business
i. What shape is this signage in?
ii. Does the same sign every day get tired?
iii. Is your message still appropriate
4) Trade show and temporary signage
a. Does your trade show signage have a WOW factor
b. Do people come to look at your displays?
c. Do you have the appropriate signage for the types of events you are going to attend and sponsor? Outdoor signage should have better stands and may be printed on different material depending on the use.
5) Other advertising – there are many other ways to advertise
a. Vehicle wraps – lowest cost per impression
b. Truck/car graphics
c. Laptop wraps – if you spend significant time in public or with customers
