As a full service sign company I wish people would ask me this question. On too many occasions I speak with a client and they give me that look of disbelief.  I've just told them its going to take anywhere from three to six weeks to get their lighted sign up on their building.  They just don't understand why it can't be done next week! I'd like to outline the process so people can understand it a bit better.

1. Research city/village/etc laws - a day or two if you can get to city hall/village hall.  Not all regulations are online.  The basics may be, but many cities have "sub" sign rules for different parts of their city.  Think about the historic district, they don't have many lighted signs, mostly carved signs.  I know a local village that has separate rules for different strip malls!
2. Creating a sign that meets city/village requirements.  I've been able to do this as quickly as a day and had it take as long as two weeks.  This is where the customer can control the process.  As soon as we satisfy our customer we can move forward.  It helps if the customer has an idea of what they want and can make decisions in a timely manner.
3. Getting the required permits for the sign - 1 - 3 weeks
   • A permit will be required to install the sign.  The city must approve the design as well, this usually requires they be reviewed by a specific department or committee
   • A business license may be necessary for the sign company to install the sign.  This could require considerable documentation
   • Many cities require a bond to be secured by the sign company to protect themselves.  This can take as few as 3 business days but may take a little longer depending on the insurance company and snail mail.
4. Construction of the sign.  This may take anywhere from 1-4 weeks depending on work load and availability of construction materials.  Special materials always take longer.
5. Installation - should be the easy part.  But sometimes you are at the mercy of the village/city.  Some require that you set up an appointment prior to installation for inspection and post installation.  This could add anywhere from a day to a week, depending on how busy the village/city is.

What I have outlined here is the best case scenario.  We haven't even address an issue like a variance to a sign ordinance. Although this process is lengthy it doesn't have to be painful.  A lighted sign is the first thing a potential customer is going to see.  Its important to have it a launch and have a quality sign.  If you can't have your sign put up in time please consider putting up a large and colorful banner to attract attention.
