This is a very common question with a fairly complicated answer. So I'll attempt to paint the picture in broad strokes.
First, most signs are unique in nature and are not stocked. They require custom design by a graphic artist. Many customers do not have artwork that is "sign" ready, meaning a graphic artist must re-size or re-create the artwork at a larger size so the resolution is not lost.
Second, many signs (i.e. lighted lettering, light boxes, etc.) must be hand crafted one piece at a time. They are not of a consistent shape or size and must be manufactured once an order has been placed.
Third, material availability may take a day or more. There are over 50 different substrates a sign can be created on. Most companies do not stock all 50. Although sign company suppliers deliver quickly they usually take 24 to 48 hours.
Fourth, quality signage takes time! At our company we shoot to have 100% satisfaction for every single customer. We continue to work until we have a perfect sign for our customers.
And finally, we may have a backlog of work that is keeping our machines and graphic artists busy.
I hope this helps everyone. If you have any type of signage questions please don't hesitate to call us at (630) 289-7082. If you prefer you can visit our sign showroom in the Chicago area as well!
