Carson City, NV – Partial Boat Reconditioning for Deck and Trim Repairs

SYNOPSIS: Tahoe Runabout Co. helps Carson City boat owners evaluate restoration needs and repair worn deck and trim while preserving sound structural components. Rough decks does not mean a rough hull.

Your Deck Looks Rough, but Your Hull May Be Fine

A worn deck can make an entire wooden boat look like it’s falling apart. The finish has gone flat, the seams between planks have opened, and the trim has turned gray where the varnish gave up. Carson City owners see that kind of surface wear and assume the whole boat is headed for a full teardown. We see it differently at our Lake Tahoe, CA shop, because the deck and the hull underneath it fail in completely different ways, on completely different timelines, and for completely different reasons.

Why Decks Fail While Hulls Hold
A wooden boat’s deck absorbs punishment that the hull never faces. The hull remains wet or shaded below the waterline, which keeps the wood’s moisture content relatively stable. The deck sits in direct sunlight for hours, catches pooled rainwater in low spots, and takes foot traffic every time someone steps aboard. That triple exposure, sun, standing water, and physical wear, breaks down deck finishes and opens plank seams faster than anything happening on the hull below. A Carson City boat that’s been sitting uncovered through summer and winter can show serious deck wear while the hull planking underneath remains tight against the frames.

The King Plank Tells You Where the Trouble Started
Every wooden boat deck has a king plank running down the centerline, and it’s the first place we look during an evaluation. That plank carries the most joint stress on the entire deck surface, because every other deck board terminates into it from both sides. When the king plank’s seams open, water gets a direct path into the subdeck structure, and from there it migrates sideways through capillary action between the deck planking and the subdeck layer. That’s why an owner can find a soft spot three boards away from the visible gap and wonder how moisture traveled that far from the nearest open seam.

Matching Wood So the Repair Disappears
When we replace individual deck boards, matching the original species matters as much as the fit of the joint. Honduras mahogany, Philippine mahogany, and teak each weather, absorb moisture, and take finish differently, so putting the wrong species into an existing deck creates a mismatch you’ll notice within a single season. We select replacement stock by grain density and color, then cut scarf joints where new wood meets old so the plank line stays continuous across the repair. A clean scarf joint distributes load evenly and keeps the seam from telegraphing through the finish over time.

Re-Bedding the Hardware Nobody Thinks About
Cleats, hinges, windshield brackets, and fuel fill plates all penetrate the deck surface, and each one of those fastener holes is a potential water entry point. Old bedding compound dries out, shrinks, and separates from the wood over the years, which lets water creep past the hardware base and into the subdeck below. We remove each piece of deck hardware, clean the old compound out of the mounting holes and off the contact surfaces, and re-bed everything with fresh marine sealant before refastening. This step adds very little time to the reconditioning process, and it eliminates the most common source of hidden deck rot.

Spend Where It Counts, Skip Where It Doesn’t
Tahoe Runabout Co. is based in Lake Tahoe, CA, and we help Carson City owners figure out exactly where the deck and trim need attention and where the boat is still solid. We scope every reconditioning job around what’s worn, not around worst-case assumptions. Call us at (775) 315-0309 and we’ll show you what your deck needs so you can put your time and money toward the boards and hardware that matter.
