In this article, we will discuss how we restore vintage Chris-Craft boats and provide some insight into our process. Diagnostic and Restoration Plan  You would likely be surprised at the “before” condition of some of the boats we have restored in the past. While a boat might seem like it’s too far gone, there are some key components of the boat we examine when determining if restoration is possible/feasible. We take on every part of the restoration process, so we examine the mechanical components of the boat, the upholstery/fixtures, and the condition of the wood of the hull and deck itself. Using our years of experience, we can create a plan to bring almost any Chris-Craft boat back to its former glory. Wood Repair and Refinishing  Perhaps the most labor-intensive and specialized part of a restoration is the process of replacing and refinishing the wood of the deck and hull. We often restore boats with rotten wood, missing sections or pieces of the hull, or even boats which have undergone damage from a collision or weather. We take extra care to replace wood with like material when needed, and we can create a seamless replacement piece due to our master carpentry skills. Once wood has been replaced, the part of the process which truly makes the boat shine starts: finishing. We sand down all the wood to a natural surface and apply several layers of stain, varnish, and/or paint to ensure long term protection and performance. Mechanical and Finishes   When performing a restoration project, it’s our goal to keep as much of the original boat as possible. However, for an older boat this sometimes isn’t possible when it comes to the engine and other mechanical components, and fixtures, upholstery, and other niche items. Luckily, we can typically source like parts and stay true to the original boat even when replacements are necessary.
