Classic runabout boats are some of the most unique vessels you’ll see on any body of water. Seeing one of these timeless boats which have been restored to their former glory is sure to invoke feelings of a bygone era, and people from across the nation trust us to care for these unique antiques.
Our team is based in Lake Tahoe, and we have a true passion for wooden boats. As wooden boat owners ourselves, we take care of our clients’ boats just as we would our own. We offer wooden boat service, repair, and maintenance for vessels which are several decades old.
The most labor-intensive projects we take on are classic boat restoration jobs. These boats might have sustained damage from a storm, have been neglected for years, or have rotting wood. In any case, we take pride in restoring these boats to their former glory. In the sections to follow, we will discuss the options we have for restoring classic runabouts.
Wood Replacement
Almost any time we take on a restoration job, there is some component of wood restoration needed. Whether the wood is splintered, rotten, or missing altogether, it takes an expert to perform a seamless replacement. When we replace wood, we source similar or identical species and use our expert carpentry skills to create a perfect match. It’s our goal, and often the result we produce, to create a replacement piece which is indistinguishable from the original.
Complete Refinishing
Once wood has been replaced, or if the wood on the boat lacks proper finishing, we can take on the task of protecting the wood with perfect finishing. The finish of a wooden boat makes all the difference in its appearance, and it also keeps the wood safe from rot and damage. We’re expert finishers, and the finishing process takes time and care. We sand down the boat to a uniform, natural wood level and then add layers of varnish and paint where needed to create a beautiful and strong outside shell for the boat.
Mechanical Restoration
Once the boat has the wood and finish to be seaworthy, we begin the process of making sure it runs reliably for years to come. In most cases, we can add new parts and complete a restoration of the engine and mechanical systems. Other times we must source a new engine for the boat. In either case, it’s our goal to stay as true as possible to the original mechanical specs of the boat while offering consistent performance.
Upholstery, Hardware, and Cosmetic Restoration
Beyond the finish and powertrain of a wooden boat, it’s the little things which make a big impact. Our restoration process isn’t complete without new upholstery, shined-up hardware, and other small details that keep the boat true to the spirit of the vessel.
