Restoring a wooden boat is a tedious process which requires a steady hand, vast expertise and the right equipment. While some projects can be done yourself, when you restore an antique wooden boat it’s best to trust the professionals with these delicate vessels.

A perfectly restored boat is an impressive sight on any body of water, and our company has a passion for these antiques. While wooden boats are rare these days, there are few boats you’ll see with a more unique look and we love being part of people’s boating lifestyle. Our owner has decades of restoration experience, and we are proud to have restored wooden boats from all over the country.

In this article, we will peel back the curtain a bit and give you some insight into our restoration process. We hope this high-level overview will give you a better idea of the service we provide, and if you are looking for a professional to handle your wooden boat restoration then we would love to help.

We have worked with boats in various conditions over the years, and you would be amazed at some of the restoration jobs we have completed. From previously sunken boats to vessels which are nearly a century old, we understand no two wooden boat restoration jobs are alike. Since this is the case, the first step we take is to understand the goals of the owner and the scope of restoration. We treat each customer with care and provide a personalized level of service.

While no two jobs are alike, most of them share all or most of the following steps as we work to restore the boat to its original glory.

The first thing we do is strip the boat down. In order to make a complete restoration of a wooden boat, we need to get back to the base level of construction and see what we’re working with. Stripping the boat involves the manual work of removing years of grime, lacquer, paint and other materials. Getting the boat to this natural state is the first step and gives us a starting point for the restoration.

From there, we examine the boat for missing pieces, weak points or other areas which need woodworking expertise. We replace or repair these areas using similar wood to what the boat is made of and take great care to ensure a perfect match after shaping, sanding and fitting the new pieces in with the old.

When we have a solid and water-tight base, it’s time to reapply a uniform layer of lacquer, paint and/or other protective materials to restore the shine of the boat. While this step might seem simple, the difference between professional and amateur finishing is night and day.

We also deal with unique aspects of some boats, such as upholstery, glass work and other odds and ends in order to produce an excellent finished product. While this quick overview isn’t comprehensive, we hope it gives some insight into the restoration process.

If you have any wooden boat needs, we want to help. For more information, give us a call or browse our website today.
