BY: Your Name, Your Business

Have you ever seen those gigantic, eye-catching signs at your favorite shopping mall or restaurant and wondered how they were made? Some of these signs are made with Foamcore, an inexpensive material. This article discusses Foamcore’s many benefits for sign-making.

We also discuss some of the most common applications for Foamcore and when making custom signs and how easy our experts at FASTSIGNS® of Boise, ID can create high-quality Foamcore signs for your business.

What is Foamcore?

Foamcore, also called foam board and paper-faced foam board, is a type of display and printing material. It has a dense foam center surrounded by two sheets of matte paper. The foam typically consists of polystyrene, which Styrofoam is made from. This makes the board extremely lightweight because of the high percentage of air in Foamcore, usually 95-98%. The foam layer is usually about a quarter-inch thick. Foamcore is strong and sturdy enough for many applications.

How is Foamcore Made?

Foamcore is made by bonding two sheets of paper around a foam center with an adhesive. The entire sandwich is then passed through a roller, which compresses the sheets onto the foam core, bonding it to the paper.

Foamcore is also made with sheets of aluminum instead of paper for a more durable option.

How is Foamcore Cut?

Foamcore can be cut with various tools, including a jigsaw, scissors, and an X-ACTO knife. When we are cutting out intricate designs, we use a jigsaw and an X-ACTO knife.

Why Foamcore is Ideal for Signs

Foamcore is an ideal substrate for signs for many reasons. It is lightweight. It’s affordable. It can be mounted to various surfaces. It is rigid, so it will not warp or bend over time if undisturbed. It is also easy to cut into custom shapes and letters.

Common Uses for Foamcore Signs

Foamcore signs are commonly used for temporary signs. Trade show displays, and event signs are good examples of Foamcore signs. You may often see Foamcore signs hung on a wall inside a business or placed in the front windows.

Foamcore is often used to make:

  • Trade show displays
  • Point of purchase signs
  • Event signs
  • Wall graphics
  • Indoor signs
  • And more
