Signs Required by the ADA All hospitals and medical centers must have ADA-compliant signs at all entrances, exits, and public areas. In addition, most hospitals and medical centers will also need ADA signs for:

• Room identification (e.g., patient rooms, restrooms, waiting areas, etc.)
• Directional signs (e.g., exits, parking, elevators, etc.)
• Overhead signs (e.g., in parking garages and stairwells)
• Informational signs (e.g., for hours of operation, policies, etc.)

ADA Sign Requirements

• Sans serif is the only font style allowed for ADA signs. Italic, oblique, and script-style fonts are not allowed.
• Stroke thickness can’t be more than 15 percent of the character's height.
• Raised characters must be a minimum of 1/32 inch from the back of the sign.
• Character height must be between 5/8 inches and 2 inches.
• Characters must be spaced at least 1/8 inches apart and a maximum of four times the character's stroke.
• Characters must be at least 3/8 inches from any raised borders and decorative elements.
• Spacing between the lines of raised characters must be 135 percent minimum and 170 percent maximum of the character's height.
• Signs must be placed at least 40 inches from the ground.
• The higher the sign from the ground, the larger the characters must be. For example, between 40 and 70 inches, minimum of 5/8 inches. 70 to 120 inches, minimum of 2 inches, 120 inches and above, minimum of 3 inches.
• Braille must be grade 2 and have a rounded shape.
• The characters' interior on an ADA sign must be completely visible. This means no drop shadows, halo effects, or other elements making the characters appear to be floating.
• The sign must have a non-glare finish and a high contrast ratio.
