Opening the windows in your home lets in the fresh air and takes out unpleasant odors. Open windows can do more than just reduce odors and can even rid the house of pollutants that cause stuffy air, allergies, and dust in your home. However, when the AC is on, do not open the windows!
Opening windows when the air conditioner is turned on can result in several problems, including:
- Irregular Cooling: The thermostat sends commands to your air conditioner telling it to cool the house when it reaches its set temperature. An open window can cause inaccurate thermostat readings and improper cooling.
- AC Works Harder: One of the biggest problems with open windows is that it forces the unit to work harder to cool down the home when the AC is on. When the AC works harder, it is prone to wear and tear and breakdown. Unless the idea of increasing the costs of your energy bills sounds nice, avoid opening the windows! Additionally, open windows can heat up the home and force the air conditioner to work harder, resulting in costlier energy bills and unit breakdown.
- Let Out the Cool Air: How often did your mother tell you to close the door because you can’t heat the whole neighborhood? The same rule applies to the air conditioner. When you open the windows, you let out cool air, essentially cooling the whole neighborhood!
- Poor Air Quality: Another issue that arises when you open windows when the air conditioner runs is poor air quality. Indoor air quality is worse than outdoor air quality already. Don’t make it worse by opening up windows unless you shut off the AC first!
