AC Constantly Running But Not CoolingWe depend on the AC units in our homes to cool us down when summer heat outside soars to its hottest temperatures. It is the number one heat buster we have here in Alabama. If you walk into your home and notice that it’s not as cool as usual, it's bothersome, to say the least. Yet, this common problem affects household after household every summer. Many culprits may cause an AC  to constantly run but not cool the home.

Why is the AC Not Cooling My Home?

There is no single answer to this question because many reasons can cause the AC to stop running or to operate less efficiently than normal. It could be an issue with the thermostat, problems with the filters, or major problems with critical system components.  Reaching out to experts is the best resolution to any AC cooling problem.

Common Reasons Why the AC Isn’t Cooling

Determine if one of the common issues on the list below is responsible for the AC running but not cooling before you reach out to an AC repairman.
  • Check the Thermostat: Check the thermostat the second you realize the AC is running but not cooling. Check the temperature of the thermostat to make sure it doesn’t need adjusting. Always switch off the thermostat before adjusting the settings.
  • Air Filter: A dirty air filter significantly impacts the cooling system. It is best to change or clean the AC air filter regularly so this issue never impacts you. Keeping clean air filters in the AC can also reduce illnesses and asthma/allergies.
  • Frozen Evaporator Coil: A frozen evaporator coil can also cause the AC to stop working properly. Signs of a frozen evaporator coil include improper temperatures in the home,  excess condensation drainage, frost accumulation on the refrigerant tubing, and/or an increase in energy bill costs.
  • Check the Condenser: The outdoor condenser unit has a coil that wraps around it. The coil has multiple “fins” spaced closely together. Sometimes the AC stops cooling but still runs when these fins become clogged or blocked. Take a look at the outside unit to determine if a quick cleaning can resolve the problem.
If you need help with an AC that runs but does not cool the home and the issues above are not causing the trouble, call a local AC repair contractor for help.
