5 Tips for Better Indoor Air QualityPoor indoor air quality affects every person inside the home. The EPA reports indoor air quality is up to 10x more polluted than outdoor air, which means we’re at greater risk of developing allergy and asthma-like symptoms and other conditions while inside our homes. Tobacco smoke, household cleaners, pets, and pesticides are common indoor air pollutants that cause sleep disturbances, breathing and upper respiratory problems, and other signs. The five tips here can help improve air quality in your home and minimize or eliminate the accompanying signs and symptoms.

1.   Monitor Indoor Air Quality

Monitor indoor air quality to ensure it remains at healthy levels. Air quality can fluctuate throughout the day and night. Monitoring the air quality via a special device allows you to fix the problem because you know exactly what is to blame.  Indoor air quality monitors can measure the amount of carbon monoxide, mold spores, allergens, and other pollutants in the air, making it easy to take action to prevent them. Devices measuring air quality inside a building provide accurate readings of the pollutants in the air, including mold spores, carbon monoxide, allergens, and others. Choose a quality air quality monitor that provides an alert any time the air quality reaches dangerously low levels.

2.   Improve Ventilation

If you ever walk inside your home and suddenly begin a coughing spell or find it hard to breathe, stuffy, chemical-clogged air could be the culprit. Open the windows in your home to increase airflow and eliminate pollutants in the air. You Can also improve airflow and quality of air in the home by making sure nothing blocks the vents which can restrict airflow.

3.   Monitor Humidity Levels

Purchase a device that allows you to monitor the humidity levels in a room to control mold spores and allergens. Appropriate humidity levels range between 30% and 50%.  Using a dehumidifier in your home can reduce humidity levels and the risk of mold spores in the home. The basement and bathroom become moist and damp.  Place a dehumidifier in each of these rooms for great results.

4.   Replace Air Filters

Clogged air conditioning filters can damage the HVAC unit, clog the air with dirt and dust particles, cause the unit to lose efficiency, and put your health and that of your loved ones at risk. Replace air filters regularly so this issue does not cause problems for your household. The EPA recommends filter changes at least once every six months.

5.   Keep Your Home Clean

A clean home is a comfortable home, in more than one way. It’s the small things that matter most when bettering indoor air quality in your home. Dust weekly and ensure the floors are swept, mopped, and vacuumed. Floors can harbor dust particles and allergens if they’re not regularly cleaned.

Improving the air quality in your home benefits the health and well-being of everyone in the household.  Follow the tips above if you want to improve indoor air quality at your home.
