WAYS TO RAISE YOUR HOME HUMIDITY

Humidity is a vital and sometimes ignored component of a healthy house, and your skin and respiratory system are probably crying for some amid a dry winter. If a humidifier isn’t currently in your budget, or if you already have one and need a little more moisture

Shower with the Door Slightly Ajar

Showering with the door open is a terrific way to allow all that steam to flow around your house. However, it may be challenging if you don’t live alone.

Wait to Drain your Bathwater

Your bathtub, like your shower, may produce a lot of steam. Wait to drain your bath after you’ve finished it, and instead, let the water sit and chill with the bathroom door open to allow part of it to evaporate. Then, when it’s entirely cool, drain it.

Boil Water

It’s truly that simple: boil a pot of water (with the lid off, of course), and the steam will escape into your kitchen and, depending on the size of your area, into adjacent rooms.

Put a Glass of Water on the Counter

Another quick fix is to put a glass of water in a dry area. Water will slowly evaporate, moistening the air slightly.

Keep Water Glass Near a Sunlit Window

You can use glasses or bowls of water for this trick: Place a cup or bowl of water on a sunny window sill that can easily warm it. Unfortunately, the sun will evaporate the water, leaving the room damp.

Keep Water Glass Near Your Radiator

If your home has radiators or baseboards, you can place a glass or bowl of water on or near them as well. Just be careful not to break any plasticware using this approach, and stick to glass or ceramic instead.

Dry Garments on a Drying Rack

If you have the space, use a drying rack for your clothes to save energy and help humidify your home. Rather than putting damp clothing in the dryer, use them to help moisten the air.

Bring in Houseplants

Plants not only look nice, but they also help to moisten and freshen the air. Water in a plant evaporates back into the air through its leaves in a process known as transpiration.

Make the Most of Stovetop Cooking

The oven can dry out the air in your kitchen, whereas stovetop cooking will steam it up. If you needed another motivation to cook more at home, make it the pursuit of ideal humidity.

Start the Dishwasher

Most dishwashers have a dry cycle after the cycle, but it’s not required and may use all that dishwashing steam to humidify the air! When you discover your machine has started the drying phase of the cycle, open it up.

Lean on Your Crock-Pot

Crock-pots make wonderful humidifiers when they aren’t being used to prepare your favorite soup. Fill the pot about three-quarters full with water, cover, and set the heat to high. Allow it to warm up before transferring it to a room in need of moisture. Allow the steam to fill the room as you remove the cover.
