Stress can really eat us alive. I know there are times when I am feeling overwhelmed at work and home and I feel like my brain is going to explode. Sometimes a week-long vacation to Maui sounds like heaven, but then that isn’t possible, here are some tips to reset your mind and brain.

Understand Your Energy Levels

Know your energy levels. Are you more focused in the morning? Then, consider scheduling meetings in the earlier part of the day. It’s also important not to over-schedule yourself. Remember to take breaks at least once an hour even if ‘it’s only to take a 5-minute walk.

Find Your Routine

Find a routine for your daily tasks so you can perform them quickly.  Identify routine tasks you perform daily, and find time-saving ways to perform them. This way you can devote your energy to more difficult items.

Eat Right and Sleep Well

Practice habits like eating a healthy diet with high-fiber, lean meats, and low-fat dairy. Combine that with good sleep hygiene, which means getting at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night. Try sticking to the same sleep schedule each night.

Take Time to Exercise

Exercising is just as good for your mental health as it is for physical health. It reduces stress and improves your clarity and focus. It can be as simple as walking or jogging around the neighborhood to taking an aerobics class or lifting weights at the gym.

Learn how to Breathe Deeply and Cool Down

If you begin to feel overwhelmed, try a few minutes of deep breathing to restore your mind and focus. It’s like an hour-long yoga and meditation class in a few minutes. Likewise, if you become angry at work, choose not to react, but try a cooling breath technique, where you breathe in through your mouth, and then breathe out through your nose. It allows your emotions to reset.

Find Time to Socialize

Are you a workaholic who goes without any breaks? This could be affecting your stress levels and your productivity. Try having weekly lunches with your colleagues or friends. It allows you to vent and bounce ideas off each other. It’s even better if you find an outdoor café, where you can enjoy the outdoors and the sunshine.

These are just a few of the tips to help you reset your mental health button to avoid becoming overstressed at work.
