Nowadays, a stylish walk-in closet one of the most trends, and we’re going share some ideas to make a closet stylish yet accessible. These ideas work for aging parents but are also great for doing now so that it will be ready years ahead of time.
Add an extra closet rod
Most closets have a single closet rod between 60” to 72” off the ground. This is impossible for someone in a wheelchair to reach. Add a second rod around 30” to 36” inches off the ground, ideal for hanging suits, dress pants, and crisp shirts.
Use a drop-down rod for high items
These are also referred to as wardrobe lifts and they bring high clothing to you. All you need to do is pull on the hanging rod, choose which apparel you want. Then, you release the lever, and the top closet rod goes back in place.
Place strategic deep drawers
Consider where to place your drawers. You don’t want them too low if it’s hard for you to bend down. Choose sliding out drawers as they will be more accessible for those using a wheelchair or walker. Consider choosing deeper drawers so you can store more items.
Add baskets
Add various baskets to your shelves. Store sweaters in one basket, hats and scarves in another, and tee-shirts in a third. This also works for organizing your shoes. Keep these items around three feet off the ground so you can reach them easily.
Keep daily items at arm’s reach
Keep items you use daily where you can reach them readily. Use counter space to fold the laundry and lay out your outfits for the week. Keep a calendar nearby so you know daily appointments and can plan outfits accordingly.
Consider sliding closet doors
If you’re totally redoing the closet, considering redoing the doors since wheelchairs often get stuck on traditional doors. Think about sliding barn doors, which are stylish, yet accessible. You can even install a remote control to function them.
