What’s located inside your garage? If you’re able to park your car in there, you’re one of the lucky ones because more than 25% of Americans can’t park their vehicle inside their garage. This is because they merely throw their excess junk in it, not leaving room for their car. We have some organizational tips for you, which will allow you to maximize your storage space and fit your car in the garage.

Decide What You Need to Store

Decide what you’re going to store in your garage. Do you have an extra fridge or freezer in there and excess kitchen appliances, such as your electric frying pan or bread maker that were just cluttering space on your kitchen floor?  Or perhaps you want to organize and store all your tools and make a workshop out there. Then, there’s herding all the kids’ toys and sports equipment together. Make piles of the items you want to keep and the items you want to sell.

Host a Garage Sale for Excess Items

Categorize your items into similar categories, such as toys, kitchen items, and tools. Price your items strategically, so you’ll make money but also so they’ll sell quickly. Clean up the items so they are ready for garage sale day.

Tool Storage

Add some magnetic strips along the wall. They are ideal for holding your basic tools, such as screw drivers, wrenches, pliers, and paint brushes.  Install a folding workbench nearby. All you need to do is attach a desk-sized piece of wood to the wall on hinges. This way, it won’t take up extra space when you’re not working.

Toy and Bike Storage

Typically, open shelving works best when storing children’s outdoor toys because they can see where it belongs. Opt for open shelves with labeled bins, which are marked for items, such as chalk, sand toys, or baseball equipment. Consider buying a toy hamper, where the children can toss their balls in after they are done playing. Use colored duct tape to make bike lanes to store bicycles.

Other Cabinet Solutions

Invest in some cabinets and drawers. Try to find one with a pull out platform, where you could store your lawn equipment and access it easily. Consider mounting some shelves on the wall and keeping large items like coolers and the children’s ride-on toys up there. This keeps bulky items off the garage floor.

The garage is often the most underused room in your home, and the professional designers at Refresh Organizers & Designers can assist you in re-organizing your garage. They can look at your space and suggest which storage solutions work the best with your needs.
