A major home renovation is both an exciting and stressful undertaking.  While it may seem exciting while you are choosing new countertops or paint chips, there is a lot of planning that goes into a home renovation. You need to consider important logistics, such as where you’ll stay while renovations are taking place and where to store your items during the renovation process. Decide on a temporary living area If you’re redoing the entire house, you may need to stay at a hotel or a family’s home during the project. However, if you’re doing it a room by room basis and the guest rooms are in an opposite wing than the master suite, you may be able to stay in those for a few days. You’ll want to consider if your family can handle the noise, dust, and debris of the renovation project. Have a renovation free zone If you take on the renovation project yourself, make sure there is a designated zone in the house that off limits, where you and your family can still relax in the evenings. The basement might be a good place.   Make sure there is a small refrigerator, microwave, and one of the boxes of utensils and plates so you can still eat meals there. You’ll probably also want a supply of take-out menus. Organize and label items carefully Empty your closets and cabinets. While sorting the items, decide if you want to get rid of anything. Place the remaining items in the appropriate box, and label it, such as silverware and dishes, or kids summer clothes. This will make it easier will you unpack again after the renovation to quickly find items.  Consider your storage options If you’re only renovating one room at a time, consider using moving clothing racks to transport clothes to the guest room for a short stay. However, if you’re redoing several rooms at once, think about renting a portable storage container if you have room for it on your property. That way, you only have to carry or roll boxes and other belongings right outside your door. This makes it a convenient option to store items and bring them back in. If you need assistance with remodeling a few rooms in your home or the entire house, please call us at 510-984-1607. Our team at Refresh Organizers will be happy to look at your space and see what the best ways to refresh it up would be.
