We’ve all lived in a small apartment or small house.
It’s challenging trying to fit all your furniture and belongings in a small space. This is often when you need some help in developing an organizational system. However, the first thing to realize is that organization is a cyclic activity and must be done routinely or the clutter will keep arriving. Here are some of our favorite tips to get you started:
- Purge items you no longer need. We all hold on to items way too long. Go through your closets and get rid of any clothes or shoes you haven’t worn in at least a year. Ask your spouse and children to do the same thing.
- Organize your closet. Hang shirts up, organized by type and color. Add some cubbies underneath to hold your shoes and hats. Slide your laundry hampers underneath, labeled with everyone’s names.
- Remember every time you buy a new pair of shoes or a new dress, you have to get rid of one to make room for it in your closet.
- Use bunk beds or loft beds in children’s rooms to free up more space for a dresser and a desk.
- Get items off the floor and invest in some vertical storage. Utilize bookshelves to hold toys, games, and puzzles. Mount a picture ledge for a creative way to display your child’s library of books. Hang a pegboard on the wall to hold arts and crafts supplies.
- Use the space in your small bathroom wisely. Add a small portable linen closet, where you can fit wicker baskets full of towels, bath supplies, and extra toilet paper. Add some scented candles and a plant for décor to the top of it. Mount some magnetic organizers to your wall to hold your hair and beauty supplies.
- Add a hanging rack from the kitchen ceiling for your everyday pots and pans. This frees up space and looks trendy.
Organizing these rooms needs to be done frequently, as much as we wish it was a once a year activity. It takes time to learn these new habits of purging and cleaning. Every time you bring new clothes, toys, or make-up tins into the house, you need to get rid of something to make room for your new purchases. It’s how the volume and organization game works.
