How to Effectively Set and Achieve Business Goals

BY: Your Name, Your Business

As we begin the first fiscal quarter of the new year, this is the time to start pursuing the completion of new goals. It’s not too late to review your past goal progression to ensure you will create purposeful ones with a refreshed perspective.

Review Your Finances

By this time, you’ve reviewed your finances or are in the process of reviewing them. You probably know how your business is doing financially and what sales revenue goals you want to achieve. Here is an opportunity to explore what improvement in specific areas of your business will help you accomplish new financial goals and the additional finances you may need to make those improvements.

Learn From Your Previous Goals

Review your goal progress for 2022 with your partners, executives, leaders, and managers: where have you succeeded and stagnated? You need to learn how and why your company is in the position it is in by answering the following:

  • What goals you created in 2022 were accomplished?
  • Where have you excelled in your business? In your marketing department, sales, customer service, improving your supply chain management, etc.?
  • What goals were unsuccessful in 2022 and why?
  • Where has your business stagnated or declined?
  • Who didn’t achieve higher performance or complete their objectives?
  • What were your threats and risks, and have they shifted during 2022?

This process involves having a critical discussion with your team – having a business coach act as an objective facilitator will help sustain open feedback and honest communication.

Look at Your Business Plan and Change It, if Necessary

Review your business plan and note if your business remains aligned with those goals, objectives, targets, and projections. If it isn’t, you may need to rewrite your business plan or realign your business to it.

Create Smart Goals

Use the SMART method to establish meaningful goals.

  • Specific – your goal should be clear and concise.
  • Measurable – your goal must be quantifiable and benchmark your progress.
  • Aligned – your goal should be in alignment with your values.
  • Realistic – your goal should be tangible.
  • Timebound – you should have a deadline to reach your goal to maintain accountability and track your progress.

Start Building a New Strategic Plan

Using the information you’ve gathered from your reviews and assessments, begin the strategic planning process by gathering the people you need, such as executives, vendors, partners, and even long-standing customers. Then creating a date, time, and place to proceed with the planning process.

Prioritize

Create a list of the most valuable tasks for goal achievement, improvement, and growth in 2023.
