I’m Mike Awadalla with CarePatrol, and for over 10 years, I’ve helped families across Contra Costa and Alameda counties find the right senior living solution. Today, I want to share what assisted living actually looks like because it’s one of the most misunderstood types of senior care.
Assisted living is for older adults who remain mostly independent but require assistance with some daily routines. It might be reminding them about their medications, helping them bathe or dress themselves, or assistance in maintaining their mobility.
What These Communities Look Like
Most assisted living centers in Pleasant Hill and surrounding cities are larger and accommodate approximately 80 to 120 residents. Such centers will generally have a mix of both individuals who reside there for assisted living care and those who remain independent. Though both groups share the same surroundings and amenities, those who have dementia or memory impairments will usually be in a secured area of their own in a wing of the center for their safety.
Care That’s Available 24/7
One of the most significant distinctions between assisted living and independent living is having caregivers present 24/7. Staff members are on duty around the clock and available to attend to what residents may need, and even some communities maintain on-site nurses so they can offer increased levels of care. It’s the amount of care they can give which makes their communities so well suited for those who desire to maintain their independence but in a secure manner.

Hi everyone, again, this is Mike with CarePatrol, a senior placement agency. I’ve been with CarePatrol for over 10 years, and I cover Contra Costa and Alameda County now. We help people find Senior Living options such as independent, assisted, dementia, and residential care homes. Today, I want to concentrate on assisted living communities. Most assisted living communities in Contra Costa and Alameda are usually a large community, anywhere from 80 to 120, and the population of the independent and assisted residents is mixed. So, there’s no separation between independent people and assisted people in the community. The only separated population is going to be the dementia residents. Anyone with dementia is going to be in a separate section of the community. Now, it’s Assisted Living because they can provide assistance, so they have caregivers in the community 24/7. Sometimes, they also have nurses on staff. That would be a community that can provide a high level of care. Communities like that in Contra Costa and Alameda there are several of them it is easy to get into. There is no waiting list at most of them. There are studios, one-bedrooms, and two-bedrooms and the price would vary on the patients. Now, it’s assisted living because they provide assistance 24/7, so when you move into an assisted living, that is two separate payments that you do. Rent and care. So, rent will include all utilities, all your meals, housekeeping, all the activities, and transportation. Care depends on what you need help with food example, an average person in assisted living might need help with managing their medications or help with bathing and dressing, and someone could provide any level of care needed, and that is what separates assisted living from independent living. Thank you.
