Do you ever look at at a sign and wonder what the heck they were think when it was designed.   I know I have. I found these pictures in a trade journal recently and I thought I’d share them with you along with my own thoughts on sign design.
Here are 5 things you should consider when having your custom business signs designed.
1)Â Make sure to alternate both the size and thickness of letters. Your message is far more likely to be noticed when using differing size and thickness of letters as shown below.
2) Make use of different fonts. Most home computers come with a hundred or more fonts and there are thousands available commercially. It not only makes your sign more interesting (read people are more like to take the time to read it) it makes it easier to read thus enhancing your message.
3) Use effects to draw attention to the most important messages in your sign. In the sign below, the use of a black background makes this the focus of the sign which is what you want for your key message. By constrast, by using a narrow font the sign designer was able to push this element to the background.
4) Combine elements to acheive your desired result. The sign below combines the the use of different text sizes and styles with a box that brings the suite number to the foreground. Note how much more prominent the words leasing office are in the second sign.
5) Colour is our friend. So far we’ve only discussed the effective use of text.. Once you have mastered the design and layout of text it’s time to consider colour. Colour can both draw attention and help to build an effective image.
