The most common and least expensive form of permanent outdoor signage are digital prints and cut vinyl signs.  These are typically mounted to a substrate (backing) such as wood or aluminum.   At the other end of the price spectrum are illuminated signs.  While more expensive than a digital print, a simple lighted sign is well within the budget of many businesses. 3D or dimensional lettering is a third alternative that is more affordable that illuminated signage.  Dimensional letters are often made from a metal such as aluminum or acrylic.  They may range form 1/4 inch to more than an inch in thickness.  By using a thicker material and setting it away from the building using standoffs, a sense of depth can be created as is illustrated in the picture above. Dimensional lettering is affixed  by drilling into the backer and inserting pins known as standoffs or by using pads which are then attached  to the substrate  using silicone.  Pictured below is a dimensional letter fitted with pads.
